WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressmen Mike Waltz and Darren Soto have introduced the bipartisan Jackie Robinson Ballpark Commemorative Site Act to honor the historic location where Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in professional baseball. The legislation aims to designate the Jackie Robinson Ballpark, home of the Daytona Tortugas, as a National Commemorative Site and initiate a feasibility study for its designation as a National Historic Landmark.

Waltz expressed the importance of preserving Jackie Robinson's legacy, stating, “Jackie Robinson changed the course of history forever on March 17, 1946 in Daytona Beach when he set foot in the then-named Daytona City Island Ballpark. Since that day, Daytona Beach’s ballpark has been a historic landmark and reminder of Jackie Robinson, the Civil Rights Movement, and the integration of modern professional baseball. We must preserve and honor Jackie Robinson’s legacy and the impact he had in Daytona Beach and across America."

Soto echoed Waltz's sentiments, emphasizing the significance of Jackie Robinson's journey in transforming baseball and inspiring social change. He stated, “Jackie Robinson's legacy is a beacon of courage, resilience, and equality. His groundbreaking journey through adversity not only transformed the game of baseball but ignited a movement for social change that continues to inspire generations worldwide."

Major League Baseball expressed its support for the legislation, with April Brown, Senior Vice President of Social Responsibility, stating, “Jackie’s transcendent legacy as a Hall of Fame player, activist and civil rights pioneer remains an inspiration to communities across our Nation." The Chairman of Minor League Baseball’s Government Relations Committee, Greg Rosenbaum, also commended the designation of the Jackie Robinson Ballpark as a National Commemorative Site, highlighting the historical significance of the location in Robinson's journey.

Bob Fregolle, Co-owner & Operating Partner of the Daytona Tortugas, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to further steward Jackie Robinson's legacy in Daytona Beach, stating, “This designation is greatly appreciated by the community here and will only strengthen his legacy for generations to come." The bill has garnered support from the entire Florida House delegation, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, and both Major and Minor League Baseball, symbolizing a united effort to honor and commemorate Jackie Robinson's historic contributions.
