On Monday, U.S. Congressman Mike Waltz introduced the Sturgeon Conservation and Sustainability Act, a bill aimed at amending the Endangered Species Act (ESA) to protect sturgeon while ensuring the livelihoods of American farmers. This legislation comes in response to the Biden Administration's decision to list non-native and hybrid sturgeon as endangered species, which has created challenges for farmers across the country.

Congressman Waltz emphasized the impact of this decision on farmers, stating, "Thanks to the Biden Administration's decision to place non-native and hybrid sturgeon on the endangered species list, farmers in Florida and across the country are now being forced to care for thousands of fish without any hope of selling, harvesting, or relocating them." He further explained that these fish have a lifespan of up to 100 years, leading to significant financial burdens for farmers who are now required to keep them alive.

To address these concerns, the Sturgeon Conservation and Sustainability Act aims to allow the continuation of sustainable fishery practices for farmed sturgeon. By amending the ESA, American farmers will be able to maintain their sturgeon operations while also promoting the conservation and longevity of the species.

This legislation has garnered support from several lawmakers. In September, Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott introduced companion legislation in the Senate, demonstrating bipartisan efforts to protect sturgeon and support American farmers. In the House of Representatives, Representatives Kat Cammack, Scott Franklin, and Neal Dunn have co-sponsored the bill, further highlighting the importance of this issue.
