When Flagler Schools Superintendent Cathy Mittelstadt announced the closure of schools in advance of Hurricane Ian, parents and students wanted to know how these missed days would be made up.
While October 17th, November 21st, 22nd, and December 23rd are listed as “hurricane make-up days” on the district’s calendar, we are able to preserve those days by shifting the end dates of the first and second quarters.
Staff has recommended moving the end of the 1st quarter to October 14th. That would then shift the end of the 2nd quarter (and 1st semester) to January 11th. This move will have little to no impact on our faculty, staff, or student calendars. It also keeps October 17th as a Teacher Workday and November 21st as the start of our Fall Break.
We do want to remind everyone that we are still in the middle of the Atlantic hurricane season, which ends on November 30th. Should we be impacted by another storm, this plan may have to be adjusted, forcing us to utilize our scheduled hurricane make-up days.
