St. Johns County Education: 84 Alaska Native students were enrolled in districts in 2023-24 school year

There were 84 Alaska Native students enrolled in St. Johns County districts in the 2023-24 school year, a 2.4% increase over the 82 Alaska Native students in the previous school year, according to the Florida Department of Education.

Data showed that St. Johns County welcomed a total of 51,944 students at the time. Among them, Alaska Native students comprised 0.2% of the student body to be the least represented ethnicity in the county. The most represented ethnicity was white, accounting for 68.3% of the students (35,493), followed by Hispanic students who made up 13.1% of the student population (6,812).

Among the two districts in St. Johns County, St. Johns County School District recorded the highest enrollment of Alaska Native students in the 2023-24 school year, with a total of 84 students, making up 0.2% of the school's total student body. This marks 0.2% of Alaska Native students in the district during the previous school year.

Gov. DeSantis has approved an education budget of over $28 billion for the 2024-25 school year. The new budget includes more than $1 billion earmarked exclusively for teacher salaries to better address the teacher shortage the state faces.

According to the National Education Association (NEA), Florida ranks 50th in the U.S. in terms of teacher salaries, only ahead of West Virginia.
