Waltz Presses Defense Secretary Austin on Secret Hospitalization

U.S. Congressman Mike Waltz, during a House Armed Services Committee hearing, questioned Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin about his unannounced hospitalization and lack of communication with the President. Waltz emphasized the importance of civilian oversight and the chain of command in the military.

Waltz pointed out the necessity for timely communication within the military chain of command, highlighting the potential risks associated with a delayed transfer of authorities. Secretary Austin confirmed that the decision to transfer authorities was made while he was conscious but unable to communicate due to being in critical care.

Despite being conscious, Secretary Austin admitted that the President was not informed about his hospitalization on January 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Waltz raised concerns about the implications of such a delay in communication, especially in urgent situations where quick decision-making is crucial.

Waltz criticized Secretary Austin for the lack of transparency in informing the American public about the transfer of authority during his hospitalization. He compared the situation to how individuals in various professions are expected to communicate when unable to fulfill their duties.

In response to Waltz's questioning, Secretary Austin acknowledged the shortcomings in notification but emphasized that the Deputy Secretary was fully empowered during his absence. However, Waltz continued to press on the issue of accountability and judgment, stating that holding oneself to a different standard is unacceptable.

The exchange between Waltz and Secretary Austin underscored the importance of transparency and effective communication within the military leadership, particularly in ensuring civilian oversight and the smooth functioning of the chain of command.
