On Monday, February 27, 2023, the St. Augustine City Commission will honor Paul L. Weaver, III, with one of the city's highest awards, the de Avilés Award. Weaver has dedicated over 40 years to the historic preservation and protection of the City of St. Augustine and its significant cultural resources.

The presentation will be held at 4:30pm in The Alcazar Room, City Hall, 75 King Street., just prior the City Commission’s regularly scheduled meeting which begins at 5:00pm, and may be seen live online at www.CityStAugTV.com, where it also will be available for on-demand viewing the following day.

Mayor Nancy Sikes-Kline nominated Weaver for his commitment of public service to the St. Augustine community, not only having served for nearly 20 years on the Historic Architecture Review Board, but also for his contribution to the multitude of National Register nominations and subsequent confirmations of historic properties and landmarks in the city.

Sikes-Kline stated, “I have known Paul personally for over 30 years and firmly believe that his decades of outstanding work and dedication to the betterment of the city qualifies him for this award.”

Weaver began his historic preservation work in St. Augustine in 1978 when he served as the Historic Sites Specialist for what was then called the Historic St. Augustine Preservation Board.  He continued his impactful work over the following four decades with projects that included expanding the period of significance of the St. Augustine Town Plan Historic District, adding approximately 400 contributing buildings to the district; preparing the first Historic Preservation Plan Element of the Comprehensive Plan, preparing more than ten National Register nominations, including several downtown neighborhood historic districts, the Alligator Farm, the Waterworks Building, and Marineland; and authoring and co-authoring several publications about Historic St. Augustine.

In addition to the Historic Architectural Review Board, Weaver has served the St. Augustine Historical Society as a member and president.
