St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on September 1.

Jacksonville, Fla., Sept. 1, 2021 – Two members of Freedom Boat Club Jacksonville dock staff were awarded scholarships by the Jacksonville Marine Association. Tony Jenkins and Guy Bistrow were both chosen to receive $2,500 towards their 2021-2022 college school year. Each year, the association chooses four recipients to receive scholarships named in memory of four of its most active and respective members.

Tony Jenkins, who works out of the Julington Creek Freedom Boat Club location, is studying to become a firefighter at Florida State College of Jacksonville. He was chosen to receive the Pete Loftin Scholarship. Jenkins has been working with Freedom Boat Club since 2015 and helps members check-in, board and dock the boats. He also helps maintain the fleet, prepare boats before each trip, refuel and clean the boats after each guest visit.

Guy Bistrow was chosen for the Dick Boger Scholarship. He is studying sports business and ROTC at St. Leo University. Bistrow joined the Freedom Boat Club staff in 2020 and works out of the Jacksonville Beach location. He is also a face that members see as they check-in, board and dock the boats. He also helps to prepare and maintain the fleet.

“We are so excited that the Jacksonville Marine Association chose these two young men for this scholarship. They truly deserve it,” said Lisa Almeida, co-owner of Freedom Boat Club Jacksonville. “Both Tony and Gus are exceptional employees and we wish them the very best as they pursue their dreams.”

The Jacksonville Marine Association Scholarships are given each year to members of the association, their employees or family. Each year, the JMA board of directors chooses the recipients of the John Lowe, Grace Rogers, Pete Loftin and Dick Boger Scholarships based on a stringent set of criteria. The scholarships are awarded to students currently enrolled in college or a post-secondary trade or vocational school along with graduating high school seniors.
