The Palm Coast City Council, in a unanimous 5-0 vote in January, agreed to put a 120-day moratorium on approving the smaller discount stores that have been popping up more frequently in the city.
With at least 10 dollar-type stores operating in Flagler County, the moratorium does not seek to eliminate the operations of discount stores, according to Mayor Milissa Holland.
With the 120-day moratorium in effect, any smaller discount store seeking to set-up shop in the area will not be considered for a permit to operate, and the council will seek to craft new legislation regarding the oversight of such stores.
Dollar General responded to the moratorium in a released statement saying it was disappointed in the council's vote.
The company released a statement explaining that "they believe the moratorium adversely affects customers— and that they strive to be a strong business partner and good neighbor."
