March 1, 2023 – Flagler County Land Management is hosting the fourth in its limited guided tour series (limited in the number of participants and frequency) called a “A Walk in the Park” – this event also adds “in a kayak.”
“A Kayak in the Park – on the Water” is an ecotour that takes place at 10 a.m. March 7 and will be provided through a public-private partnership with Ripple Effects Ecotours and is limited to eight (8) registrants. The exact meeting location will be released to those who pre-register for the two-hour tour.
The kayak tour will take participants from the Town of Marineland across the Matanzas River and wind its way through the estuary and – tidal and wind conditions permitting – be able to view Princess Place Preserve from the water. Participants will learn the importance of the estuarine system in the location where Pellicer Creek and the Matanzas River join flows.
“We’ll take a moment to observe wildlife we chance upon, and generally enjoy the natural beauty that is part of life here in Flagler County,” said Public Lands and Natural Resource Manager Michael Lagasse. “We are again limiting the participation, because the excursion is challenging, and we want to be able to minimize our impact to the environment while experiencing the serenity of the estuary.”
Those who are participating should:
- Expect a two-hour, self-paddled kayak excursion in tandem kayaks. Guide and equipment provided by Ripple Effect Ecotours (no personal kayaks will be allowed)
- Wear appropriate closed-toe, preferably waterproof shoes
- Bring drinking water, sunscreen, and insect repellent
Additional recommendations include:
- Bring a hat and raincoat
- Bring a snack
If bad weather is forecast, the guided tour will be cancelled up to 9 a.m. on the day of the excursion.
Registration is possible by contacting Flagler County’s Mike Lagasse at mlagasse@flaglercounty.gov . All participants are required to sign a hold harmless waiver and will receive kayak instruction as part of the tour. No experience necessary.
