Flagler County Emergency Management and East Florida Mosquito Control District have been working with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to bring planes for aerial spraying – something that may happen next week.
“Currently, multiple species of floodwater mosquitoes are at very high numbers,” said East Flagler Mosquito Control District Director Mark Positano. “We monitor the population of mosquito species daily through our trapping and surveillance efforts and this is an extreme event.”
Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has been sending planes throughout the State of Florida – south to north – working through all the counties that have requested the aerial service in the aftermath of Hurricane Ian. The measure is necessary statewide as widespread flooding produces a high number of mosquitoes.
“We are doing all we can to ensure that Flagler County receives appropriate treatment,” Positano said. “State assistance will allow for several planes to spray large parts of the County – west of State Road A1A through the developing areas west of U.S. 1 – to include Daytona North, Espanola, and Rima Ridge. When the planes are available, it will take one or two nights to complete.”
